Are you ready for Hurricane Season?
The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1st, and runs until November 30th. It has been projected that the number of storms this year will be above average. A recent study found that in the past few years, storms have become more intense in a short period of time, undergoing rapid intensification. That was the case for several of the most destructive storms in 2017. Researchers also suggest that since the world is getting warmer, we can expect to see more intense storms with heavy rains, and lots of flooding.
An average hurricane season is based on the 30-year average from 1981 to 2010. By that definition, an average season includes 12 named storms and six hurricanes, with three of those being major hurricanes.
Even storms that don't qualify as major hurricanes can still have major consequences. Harvey qualified as a tropical storm, not a hurricane, when it dumped record-setting rains on Houston and other parts of the Gulf Coast, causing $125 billion in damage.
No matter how many storms end up forming in the coming months, it's important to remember that it takes only one hurricane hitting a populated area, oil platform, or drilling rig to claim lives and property.
After a hurricane or tropical storm, the goal in the Industry is to return to full operations as quickly and as safely as possible.“Don’t wait for a hurricane to be on your doorstep to make a preparedness plan, by then it may be too late,” Are you prepared?
