MYTHS WITHIN MANAGEMENT THINKING

"Major events and crises are very unusual to validate spending on mitigation”

When the idea of implementing an incident and crisis management program is suggested to managers, they often say something along these lines “It has never happened to us, and is practically impossible that it will ever happen in the future”; “We have a very strong and clear safety procedure for our business and facilities, there are no issues and everything is under control”; “We don’t need to spend extra money in an incident or crisis management program.”

A crisis, by definition, is an abnormal and unstable situation, an undesirable event that might rarely occur. However, reality shows that major incidents and crises really do happen, there are plenty of examples on the literature, and it does not matter how strong our safety procedures are or how many barriers we have in place. These seldom events occur because we are human beings, and humans make mistakes, it is in our nature. Therefore, Organizations need to be well prepared to successfully respond to the unpredictable. The real test for an Organization and its leadership team is during the stormy weather, because it is much easier to do business during peaceful times.

Spending money to implement and maintain a proper and sounded Emergency and Crisis Management System is an Organizational investment. Being prepared really ads business value for better managing risks, enhancing resiliency, minimizing disruptions, and preventing and diminishing crises that might place the Organization out of business. Hope is not a strategy.

Are you ready for Hurricane Season?

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1st, and runs until November 30th.  It has been projected that the number of storms this year will be above average. A recent study found that in the past few years, storms have become more intense in a short period of time, undergoing rapid intensification. That was the case for several of the most destructive storms in 2017. Researchers also suggest that since the world is getting warmer, we can expect to see more intense storms with heavy rains, and lots of flooding.

An average hurricane season is based on the 30-year average from 1981 to 2010. By that definition, an average season includes 12 named storms and six hurricanes, with three of those being major hurricanes.

Even storms that don't qualify as major hurricanes can still have major consequences. Harvey qualified as a tropical storm, not a hurricane, when it dumped record-setting rains on Houston and other parts of the Gulf Coast, causing $125 billion in damage.

No matter how many storms end up forming in the coming months, it's important to remember that it takes only one hurricane hitting a populated area, oil platform, or drilling rig to claim lives and property.

After a hurricane or tropical storm, the goal in the Industry is to return to full operations as quickly and as safely as possible.“Don’t wait for a hurricane to be on your doorstep to make a preparedness plan, by then it may be too late,” Are you prepared?
